            Information processing, storage and transmission continue to push the limits for electronic devices in terms of high frequency/speed operation and low power.  In terms of devices this translates to smaller dimensions and higher doping concentrations.  This presents formidable barriers to conventional silicon CMOS technology which has been the dominant technology.  Even though advancements in this technology will continue for the next decade or so, it has become evident that this technology will reach a limit when gate dimensions reach the 25 nm scale.  At these dimensions, the doping levels for most devices become very high, and insulator thickness very small, so that tunneling mechanisms become dominant and present severe limitations on device performance.  These limitations are generally manifested in high gate-leakage currents and small breakdown voltages.

 

            Even though tunneling mechanisms present severe limitations for conventional devices, they can also be used to advantage in some unique devices which have special properties and require very small dimensions.  These include such devices as Esaki Tunnel Diodes (TD’s), Resonant Tunneling Diodes (RTD’s), Resonant Tunneling Transistors (RTT’s) and Single Electron Transistors (SETs).  Instead of using high doping levels to create junctions and potential barriers, these devices utilize hetero-junction technology to form barriers and quantum wells for their basic operation.  In order to obtain an understanding of the basic principles and mechanisms in these devices, we need to understand the basic properties of Quantum Wells (QW’s), Quantum Barriers (QB’s) and Tunneling Mechanisms.  Such QW’s and QB’s are formed by utilizing Hetero-junction Technology among various semiconductor materials and Tunneling Mechanisms are based on Quantum Mechanical principles.

Nanotechnology is the exploitation of novel and improved properties, phenomena, and processes that occur at the intermediate scale, 0.1 to 100 nanometer, between individual atoms, molecules, and their resulting bulk behavior. A cubic volume of one nanometer length per side can contain 176 diamond atoms. Considering that a micron is one micrometer or 103 nanometers, there could be 176 billion (109) diamond atoms contained within a cube with one micron per side. It becomes very obvious that there is tremendous potential for fabricating molecular systems that could possess high-functional complexity within a single 1-micron cube when designing and fabricating at the nanometer scale. A limited taste of some of the practical reasons why engineering at the nano scale is so promising for this novel / upcoming interdisciplinary science are:
